How to Empower Your Centre Leaders to Take Ownership and Lead with Confidence

Strong centre leaders are the backbone of any successful preschool. When empowered to take ownership, they not only ensure smooth day-to-day operations but also inspire their teams and elevate the overall early childhood learning experience. But how do you instill confidence and leadership in your centre managers?

We have worked with hundreds of preschools, liaising with personnel from business owner, franchise owner, principals, and cluster heads, as well as preschool principal candidates. We’ve heard complaints and compliments alike, here’s how.

1. Define Clear Expectations

Uncertainty can lead to hesitation. Provide centre leaders with well-defined responsibilities, clear performance expectations, and measurable goals. When they know exactly what success looks like, they can take initiative with confidence in their early childhood education roles.

2. Foster a Culture of Trust, Provide Room for Autonomy

Micromanagement stifles leadership. Encourage your centre managers to make decisions and take ownership of challenges. Offer guidance but allow them the freedom to implement their own solutions. When they feel trusted, they become more proactive and accountable, creating a stronger early childhood learning environment.

3. Provide Ongoing Development

Great leaders aren’t born—they are developed. Invest in leadership training, mentorship programs, and industry workshops focused on early childhood education. Continuous learning not only sharpens their skills but also gives them the confidence to handle complex situations with ease.

4. Encourage Problem-Solving

Instead of offering immediate solutions, challenge your leaders to think critically. Ask, “What do you think is the best way to handle this?” By encouraging independent problem-solving, you help them develop resilience and decisiveness, which is crucial in early childhood leadership.

5. Recognize and Reward

Acknowledgment fuels motivation. Celebrate their successes, whether it’s through verbal praise, bonuses, or professional growth opportunities. A centre leader who feels valued is more likely to take ownership and inspire their early childhood education team.

6. Open Communication

Leadership thrives in an environment of transparency. Hold regular check-ins, provide constructive feedback, and encourage centre leaders to voice their ideas and concerns. A two-way communication flow fosters confidence and innovation in early childhood settings.

7. Lead by Example

Centre leaders model their leadership style based on what they observe. Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and a problem-solving mindset. When they see you handling challenges with confidence, they’ll follow suit, strengthening the overall early childhood leadership culture.

Empowering your centre leaders is about more than delegation—it’s about fostering a culture of trust, learning, and accountability. When equipped with the right tools and support, they can confidently take ownership, drive positive change, and create an exceptional early childhood learning environment for both educators and children.
